Badass Icons: Brunette Bad Bitches of the 80s-90s

I am always looking for makeup inspiration and although minimal makeup is the wave on runways, as of late I am super inspired by the dark, edgy cult-ish vibes of some of the hottest beauties of the late 80s and early 90s.

I may be biased because I am also a brunette (shout out to my raven-hair girls!) but to me, the dark-haired chicks of the 90s really screamed “BADASS” and they really paved some of the ways for our most coveted fashion and beauty looks.

So who am I referring to? I’ll count them down for you!

10. “I’ll Cut You” Shannen Doherty

I fell in love with her on Beverly Hills 90201 (it’s like the only zip code that was worth remembering back then, duh). But she really hit the nail on the head with her role as Prue on Charmed.  Her hair was always perfectly straight and her stare was borderline deadly! She was unapologetic about being mean and in charge. Her contoured cheekbones were a plus!

9. “Always Exotic” Alyssa Milano

While we are speaking of Charmed, another cast member, Alyssa Milano was always someone I could (and still can) stare endlessly at. I mean she’s HOT (with a capital H-O-T).  Alyssa being a little bit more on the exotic side, was someone who’s sex appeal and more bronzy skin I could always relate to. She was the personification of “sex” in the 90s and for that she will always be a badass bitch!

8. “The Ultimate Diva” Naomi Campbell

I love her! She’s controversial, she dominated the runway with her catwalk and although she seemed a tad bit crazy, we wanted to be besties with her. Her accent is also super kickass (she’s a Brit for God’s sake)! But why do I really love her? I mean she was one of the original “supermodels”… talk about badass. Her full lips and light eyes are always a source for beauty inspo! *Drops mic*

7. “The Beauty Mark” Cindy Crawford

Another original “supermodel” we’d all like to sleep with or hang out with? Cindy Effin Crawford. I remember being young and seeing her in her perfectly coiffed hair and gorgeous smile, and thinking “damn, I want to be her.” And like, who didn’t? Cindy owned the world in the 90s! She was everywhere, magazines, on TV, in commercials, in your favorite brands ad.  You name it, Cindy did it. And that beauty mark? It rivals Marilyn’s TBH!

6. “Jaw Droppin’ Bitch” Rose McGowan

When you think of beautiful brunettes of the 90s you have to think of Rose McGowan.  The girl had the body, the boobs and the black hair to match her black soul in Jawbreaker.  She also dated kickass rockstar in his own right, Marilyn Manson.  And can we all just rewind to the dress she wore at the 1998 VMAs??? Well whatever portion we can consider an ACTUAL dress.  To me it was more of a body chain, but whatever, she slayed it. Till this day the likes of Rihanna and Amber Rose wear dresses that resemble the original, but no worries Rose, we know you DID IT FIRST!  Rose was unapologetic in her fashion and dating choices and to me that was super SEXY!

5. “Teenage Scream Queen Supreme” Neve Campbell

My top 5!!! I had to kick off the most important part of this countdown with one of my favorite actresses of the 90s, Neve Campbell. I do not know where to start with her.  Physically she looks almost unassuming; she could be your “girl next door” but she realllllyyy isn’t.  She has the appeal of a good girl but the personality of a badass. She was the quintessential teenage dream to me.  I kind of  modeled my youth angst to parallel hers. She starred in every movie that ever mattered to me: The Craft, Scream and Wild Things.  Let’s face it, if you grew up in the 90s you knew Neve Campbell.

4. “The Only Huxtable That Matters” Lisa Bonet

This woman till this day is my WCW.  Does she age? Is she real? Zoe, her daughter, is just another beautiful extension of her. But in the 90s I remember thinking she was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen (she still is).  Her hair was fabulous, her face had perfect symmetry and she might be one of the only reasons I ever watched the show. Her beauty alone gets her on my list.  But the fact that she’s eclectic and cool and weird and earthy are the real reasons I love Lilakoi Moon!

3. “The Real Witch Bitch” Fairuza Balk

I love her. I mean, she’s so easy to hate, but soooooo much better to actually love. She’s the actual definition of BAD-ASS.  Don’t believe me? Watch The Craft a few times over (although the first time should be enough to convince you).  This movie really opened my eyes to a lot of things.  Not witchcraft.  Fashion, kickass women all in one move and beauty.  The dark lips and the too pale skin….OBSESSED. She hasn’t been in a plethora of films… but in all of her roles, she’s the bitch we love to hate.  However in my mind, Fairuza is the wild child, dark witch of the 90s! And that’s all that matters.

2. “Woman Crush WEDNESDAY” Christina Ricci

If there was ever a 90s icon I really wished I could be best friends forever with it was Christina Ricci. She’s beautiful in a “weird and unconventional” way and her portrayal of Wednesday on the Addams Family, is reason enough to have her on this list. I loved her in Casper and she starred in one of my favorite movies ever Sleepy Hollow.  Her big brown eyes and big forehead (like mine) gave her a very unique quality, and her acting chops proved she was the “kid star” of the 90s. She was emo, and I am here for it!

1. “Most Influential 90s Bitch” Winona Ryder

Ah, Winona.  Congrats on your newly appointed beauty ambassador position with Marc Jacobs.  But this entire post is really a tribute to what you did for girls like me in the 90s.  I can’t think of another name I can automatically think about when people talk about that era. The 90s is WINONA.  To put it into perspective, she was in every movie worth watching, dated the man we ALL wanted and basically slayed the 90s, single-handedly. She really paved the way with her movies, her fashion and her very “this is who I am” personality. She was dark with a side of innocent.  Pretty enough to look like she couldn’t hurt a fly but with an aura around her that showed us she CLEARLY could. Who didn’t want to be Winona? In a time where being blonde and pretty was seemingly all you could be, she came in the game and f*cked it up! Edward Scissorhands, Girl Interrupted, Beetlejuice and Johnny Depp, all under her belt.  I digress. The 90s to me were all about WINONA.

NOTABLE MENTION:

“Everyone’s HS Crush” Tiffani Thiessen

Who didn’t watch Saved by The Bell in the 90s? If you didn’t, what rock did you live under? I want answers! However, for the 99% of the rest of us who did watch, Kelly Kapowski was THE girl. You know? The perfectly popular, always pretty, original #wcw… yeah, that was her. Although her too bright outfits and super happy personality weren’t always my cup of tea, I can’t say I didn’t daydream to be the popular schoolgirl every guy lusts over once or twice. She still gives us all serious emoji heart eyes!
